Barometer |
This animation shows the basic working of a liquid barometer. A column of fluid such as water or mercury is held up in a closed top column by the pressure of the air around it. The pressure of the air can hold around 10m of water or 760mm of mercury. Increasing air pressure pushes up down on the outside fluid, which in turn pushes the fluid further up the column. |
